About UCC United FC:

UCC United FC was founded in 2006 by Declan Jordan, and what started as a group of college workers playing the odd game of 5-aside together, has now become a fully-fledged member of the Cork Business League. Initially the club struggled, for both players and results. Even though UCC employs over 2,500 people connecting with them and getting players to join was not easy at first. A lot of the early seasons in the league were tough with results even tougher to come by, with a weekly struggle to get players to come along. The reason for the club’s existence to this day is down to the early hard yards put in by Deccie Jordan. The team persisted and as the seasons went by a more stable core group of players was starting to come together. Aodh Quinlivan and Evan Healey from Cork County Council joined along with Cathal Doherty and Walter Messina and slowly the pool of players started to grow. Aodh Quinlivan took over as manager with Trevor Darby assisting him and the fortunes of the team started to change, and results started to improve. In 2013 we become the CBL Division 1 champions which capped off a great season for us and one when we felt the club was becoming established narrowly missing out on the double, losing out to Marlboro Trust in the CBL Shield Final at Turners Cross Stadium. Ian Matthews and Shyam Mala Thakuri were scoring goals regularly which is key to success in the league.

UCC United were finally in the Premier Division and all the hard work and commitment of Aodh and Trevor had paid off, we were taking it very seriously and the planning and co-ordination was starting to show on the pitch. In our first year in the Premier Division, we finished 4^th, behind Dell EMC, the Cork Eagles and Marlboro Trust and every year we felt we were making progress. Coming up against the top teams such as Marlboro was great for us as we knew this was what we had to try and match. There were bumps along the road like every team, still every summer it seemed we lost great players for different reasons and recruitment as every team knows is a year-round process.

In 2016/2017 we had our best season so far, finishing 5 points behind Doolan’s Cow who were and still are, a serious outfit. At the end of this season, Aodh Quinlivan decided to step down having given long years of service to the club, and he left behind a very strong squad. We were very lucky then to pick up Joe Doherty as our manager, a man with a lot of experience in football at all levels in Cork. In the 2017/18 season we finally reached our goal, a squad of players that had been together for 3-4 years with 1 or 2 new additions won the league beating Doolan’s Cow by 3 points with Satellite Taxis and Marlboro closely following. For all the previous players and managers this was a proud day. Over the years we have had many good cup runs too, in the FAI Junior Cup and the Munster Junior Cup we have given many teams a surprise, as a lot of Cork Business League teams have over the years. It is a great feeling to be underestimated by teams who feel the League is of a low quality. We are delighted to be playing in the CBL and hope to be competing in it for many years to come.
