CBL GOTW: The Cow get Valiant Victory over DHF Grangevale
Doolan’s Cow Bar 2 – 0 DHF Grangevale
Man of the Match: Shaun Teegan
It was a hugely anticipated bout in Mayfield United park as Doolan’s Cow Bar captured all three points in their Grandon’s Toyota CBL Premier Division top of the table clash against DHF Grangevale, writes Donncha Noonan.
It was an exciting contest straight from the off as Doolan’s Cow put the pressure on and took the lead after seven minutes. A brilliant ball down the left hand side allowed Aaron Hennessy to charge towards the byline before pulling the ball across the box for Jamie Murphy, who took a touch before tucking the ball into the bottom left corner to give his side the lead.
The Cow continued their strong start and were able to double their lead in the twenty fourth minute. Dylan O’Donoghue swung a cross into the box that was glanced away by the Grangevale backline. The ball fell to Jamie Murphy on the left hand of the box, and Murphy skipped past a defender before squeezing a shot past Jamie O’Sullivan at his near post to double his side’s lead.
They weren’t settled with just two goals as Doolan’s Cow went to chase a third, and almost found it three minutes later. Good play in midfield allowed Jamie Murphy to slip a ball in behind the Grangevale defence for Aaron Hennessy to chase. Hennessy got his shot away but dragged it wide of the post.
There was one more chance for the Cow five minutes before half time. They won a free kick at the edge of the Grangevale box. Jamie Murphy stepped up to take it, and rattled the bar with his effort as he nearly made it three.
That was that for the first half, as Doolan’s Cow dominated an entertaining first half and they went into the break two goals to the good.
It was a very stop-start second half with the Cow very happy to be conservative while Grangevale struggled to create big chances, but they did go close with fifteen minutes to play. They won a free kick on the right hand side of the box. Aaron O’Sullivan stepped up and curled a shot that whistled past the top left corner.
Grangevale did keep the pressure on and again almost got back into the game thanks to a stroke of luck three minutes later. The ball broke to full back James Kelleher in the opposition box. His shot took a deflection towards the bottom right corner, but James Murphy got down and held it.
That was the last chance that Grangevale could create as a courageous fightback in the second half ultimately fell on deaf ears as they couldn’t get back into the game and Doolan’s Cow walk away from Mayfield United park with all three points in a huge result in the Grandon’s Toyota CBL Premier Division.
