OBS Pull Clear Late on to Secure Shandon Cup Triumph
O’Brien Scaffolding 3 – 0 Marlboro Trust
Man of the Match: Sean Blake (O’Brien Scaffolding)
OBS and Marlboro Trust went head to head in the second of two finals hosted in St Colman’s Park. The Shandon Cup final was a tough battle, but it was OBS FC who came out winners, writes Donncha Noonan.
It took just eleven minutes for the first goal of the night, and it went to OBS. Sean Blake broke forward from midfield and slid the ball through to Niall O’Brien, and the frontman was clinical and slotted the ball into the back of the net to give his side an early lead.
OBS continued to play well and almost doubled thor lead ten minutes later. David Manley curled a beautiful pass down the left channel through to Rory Buckley, but the wideman could only poke an effort narrowly wide of the near post.
Marlboro had chances of their own though, and came close in the thirty sixth minute. Brian Gilhooly fired a ball into the feet of Daniel Jaouhari thirty yards out. He turned brilliantly and fired a shot towards goal, with his shot barely whistling over the crossbar.
They had another opportunity to fire level on the stroke of half time. A throw-in on the left hand side caused havoc in the box. The ball eventually fell to Daniel Hurley, who found Luciano De Conceicao Silva. He hit a shot on the turn, but his effort rolled just wide of the post.
The second half started just as evenly matched as the first did, with Marlboro getting the first chance of the half sixty five minutes in. Jaouhari looped a ball towards the back post where it found the oncoming Hurley, but his shot trickled past the far post.
Despite Marlboro’s hard work, it was OBS who got a sucker punch of a second goal with fifteen minutes to play. Tiago Rodrigues brought down Anthony O’Reilly in the box, with the ref pointing to the spot with no hesitation. Mark Maher stepped up and tucked the penalty away to double their lead.
OBS tucked the game to bed with four minutes to play. Ross Daly got on the end of a brilliant corner delivery and fired a header goalwards, that ended up in the back of the next after defenders on the line couldn’t quite clear it.
OBS put the game away late on and were able to get their hands on the Shandon Cup to complete a domestic double. Congratulations to everyone at O’Brien Scaffolding.
