CBL GOTW: Marlboro Red Card Decides Fiery Fixture
Marlboro Trust FC 0 – 4 O’Brien Scaffolding FC
Man of the match: Ross Drummond
A lively top of the table clash in Mayfield Sports Complex was decided by a late red card which allowed OBS FC to run out 4-0 winners over Marlboro Trust FC in their CBL No Sin Second Division bout, writes Donncha Noonan.
It was a very intense start to the match with both teams very even, but it was OBS who struck the first blow after thirteen minutes. Great work by Sean Blake down the left hand side allowed him to square it to the edge of the box for Niall O’Brien, who sent a side-footed shot flying into the top right corner to give his side an early lead.
OBS almost bagged a second eight minutes later. A scramble in the box after a corner led to a half-clearance breaking to Eric Lordan on the edge, who’s low shot narrowly whistled past the left hand post.
Marlboro had chances of their own, and could have found themselves level in the twenty ninth minute. Brilliant work in the box led to Daniel Jaouhari breaking through the right channel. The Marlboro front man tried to guide the ball into the far corner, but he dragged his shot just wide of the post.
That was all for the first half of the game, as a tightly contested game was separated by a great finish from Niall O’Brien.
Marlboro started the second half the better team, but their momentum was scuppered by the big action of the game with sixteen minutes to go. The ball came into the feet of Sean Blake in midfield. As Blake flicked the ball around the corner, Marcos Antonio Andreao made a contentious standing tackle from behind. After a lengthy delay due to players clashing, Andreao was given a straight red card as Marlboro’s quest for an equaliser took a massive hit.
OBS went for a second, and with their man advantage, found it in the eighty third minute. A failed clearance meant the ball landed at the feet of Sean Blake in the box. He wriggled his way closer to goal and fired a shot into the bottom left corner to double his side’s lead.
They weren’t done there as OBS grabbed a third with four minutes to go. Ross Daly rose highest to a David Manley corner and powered a header home as he put the game to bed.
Daly notched a second of the game with the last kick of the match. Shane Barry slid a ball in behind for Daly to chase, and the winger slotted it past the keeper to score his side’s fourth of the day.
That brought what was a very fiery game to a close as OBS took full advantage of their 10-man opponents and were able to run out 4-0 winners on the day.
