Munster Junior Cup – Second Round

Doolan’s Cow 6 – 1 Everton

In-form Doolan’s Cow put MJL Premier Division joint leaders Everton to the sword when the teams met at Mayfield Community School last Sunday morning. The hosts, who are already in the open draw of the FAI Junior Cup, went in front in the 15th minute through summer signing Jamie Murphy who got his head to Aaron Hennessy’s cross. Murphy set up Tony O’Reilly for a second fifteen minutes later only for Craig Hurley to reduce the deficit on the hour. James Cotter restored Doolan’s’ two goal advantage within five minutes with a spectacular strike from outside the area and Hennessy followed up with a fourth in the 75th minute. With ten minutes remaining, and Doolan’s in complete control, Murphy stamped his mark further on the game to complete his hat-trick with goals in 80th and 85th minutes. Murphy, Stephen McCarthy and Craig Keegan impressed throughout for the hosts.

OBS 1  – 4 Drinagh Rangers

West Cork League premier division leaders made the long journey to Ballea Pk. last Friday night and came away with 4-1 at the finish after the outcome hung in the balance up to the final quarter. Barry O’Driscoll (H) capitalized on a mix-up at the back to put Drinagh one up in the 10th minute before Colm O’Brien released Jack Cotter who outpaced the centre-back to equalize ten minutes later. O’Brien and Lee Maher went close to a second for the hosts only for O’Driscoll to grab a second for the visitors before half-time. OBS’s Wayne Rodgers displayed quick feet in trying to get Anto O’Reilly away on the right-wing but Rangers put the tie to bed with goals from Thomas Connolly and O’Driscoll again in the final twenty minutes to advance to the third round.

Carrigaline United 3 – 1 UCC Utd

UCC’s interest in the competition was ended by Carrigaline United who brought the best out of UCC  keeper Sean Mellet early on before deservedly taking the lead through Stephen Barry who finished a deep cross at the far post. The visitor’s response produced an equalizer from Eric Montgomery’s cross which was turned into his own net by a home defender. But, the joy was short-lived as a contentious offside call was waved aside allowing Wayne O’Halloran to restore the host’s lead with Barry getting a toe to the ball to add a third minutes later. Walter Messina headed over from a corner before half-time but despite both teams creating chances in the second 45 and Mellet again performing heroics with a couple of one on one saves, UCC couldn’t find the breakthrough to take the tie to extra-time.

Cork Hospitals 0 – 5 CPL

Cork Hospitals’ wretched start to the league campaign continued with another heavy defeat, this time to CPL, who were still smarting after their  big loss to Colso Celtic the week before. The visitors should have been ahead at half-time but once the outstanding Afonse Gasper netted with a clever flick to beat a defender and run on to score, there was doubt on where the points would go. Chris Brant’s inch perfect pass sent Gasper in for a second with the lively striker completing his hat-trick within minutes of grabbing his second after being put through by Jamie Nagel. Cian Higgins’ flick led to Keelyn Cotter adding  a fourth with Cotter’s inspirational run from central defence finishing with  Brant completing the scoring. Hospitals’ cause wasn’t  helped by having a player dismissed for two yellow cards at one-nil. Paul Cummins had a fine match for the winners.

Co. Council 1 – 1 Marlboro Trust

The oldest fixture in the league ended with a share of the spoils after Steven O’Reilly opened the scoring for Trust in the 25th minute. A foul on Robert Susek led to Fergus O’Connor equalizing from the penalty-spot five minutes before half-time. In a tough encounter in which both teams strived for the winner, O’Connor came closest to breaking the deadlock when his rising shot came back off the post. Liam Buckley and Chris Halpin kept Council ticking over in the 90.
