On the Bank Holiday weekend of October 28/29th 1978 as Cork was about to launch its first Jazz Festival with Ronnie Scott, George Melly and Kenny Ball headlining the inaugural event, there were goals aplenty among the nine matches scheduled for the same weekend, writes Finbarr Buckley.

Garda made the trip to Crosshaven to play the hosts in the FAI Junior Cup on the Saturday and despite going three behind to a Buzz O’Connell hat-trick, rallied to pull two back through Tom Hayes and Ronnie Cooke. On the same afternoon, Youghal Yarns ‘A’ ,(John McHale, Kieran Kidney, Dave Barrett and Michael Daly), put four past Penn Chemicals at Currabinny in the shield, Noel Sisk and James Coughlan on target for the hosts. Pfizers and Postal United shared a goal apiece at Pfizer Pk. with Jimmy Horgan cancelling out Nicky Byrne’s opener for United.

On the Sunday, AIB squeezed past Roches Stores on penalties in the Munster Junior Cup after the Banks’ Liam Leahy exchanged goals with Tony O’Brien. The pick of the shield matches on that day featured Fords’A’’s, (Tony O’Leary (2), Brendan O’Keeffe, John Good, Jimmy Coop, Stephen Heffernan),  6-4 win over True Temper , (Liam Murray, Alfie Davis, Paul O’Connor, Timmy Tabbs), at the Showgrounds and CIE Athletic’s, (Noel Kent (2), Hughie Barriscale(2), Willie Keane, Thomas Hawkins, John Deasy), 7-3 triumph over Harringtons, (Noel McCarthy, Michael Foley, Martin Hayes) at Blackpool Pk.
