New Balance FAI Junior Cup – 2nd Round

Castlelack 1 – 6 Doolan’s Cow

DOOLAN’S romped to a resounding 6-1 win over West Cork League outfit Castlelack in  their New Balance FAI Junior Cup second round tie at Lauragh Industrial Estate, Bandon last Saturday afternoon, writes Finbarr Buckley.

The visitors went in front in the 15th minute through Kevin Finn only for James Cotter to level with a deft lift over the advancing keeper ten minutes later. Cotter set up Stephen McCarthy for 2-1 within five minutes before Cotter again got in on the act to net his second and his side’s third five minutes before the break. Jamie Murphy put the tie to bed early in the second half with a fourth for Doolan’s with the dominant hosts again getting on the score sheet through the irrepressible Cotter who completed his hat-trick from a penalty after Murphy was taken down in the area. Murphy notched his second of the afternoon and Doolan’s’ sixth with five minutes remaining to secure a safe passage through for the Stephen O’Leary, Aaron Hennessy and Tony O’Reilly inspired hosts.

OBS 1 – 4  UCC

After Nyall O’Brien hit the post early on for OBS, Leo Cheng gave the MSL premier division side a half-time lead before Sam Powel, and Keith White tagged on further goals inside the first quarter of the second-half to leave the hosts with a mountain to climb to get back into the tie. O’Brien did manage to reduce the deficit from a rebound after Arainn McGrath’s penalty had been saved before Lee Maher was off target from a second penalty with twenty minutes remaining. Frustrations boiled over with the dismissal of two home players leaving Jimmy Goldsmith to add a fourth for the visitors late on to put an unfair gloss on the scoreline at the finish.

Marlboro Trust 2 – 5 Fermoy

MSL Premier Division promotion contenders Fermoy had too much upfront for Trust who kept in the tie with a gritty performance which augurs well for the demanding premier division campaign ahead. The teams had been level one-one at half-time, Pat McSweeney netting for Marlboro and it might have been a different score at the finish had the ball not come back off the crossbar twice at 3-2. Gary Burke (2), Christopher Murphy, Sean Desmond and Shane Fogarty were on target for the visitors.

Munster Junior Cup 1st Round

UCC Utd.5 – 0 Kilbritain Rovers 0

UCC were comfortable throughout under floodlights at the Mardyke in mid-week after the disappointment of their shield exit the week before. Ali Ahmidat opened the scoring in the 6th minute and two further goals late in the opening half from Ahmidat and Eric Montgomery made the tie safe for Stephen Moynihan’s charges. Long-serving Walter Messina powered in a header on seventy-four minutes before Joao Matos completed the scoring with the fifth after the keeper could only palm Montgomery’s shot into his path. Cian O’Leary and Jerry Coughlan impressed for the visitors.

Planet Entertainment (Cork) 5  – 0 Cork Hospitals

Planet were full value for their fourth straight win in the competition to remain top and make it through to the knock-out stages for the first time. Having been on top early, Planet went in level at half-time but  went for the juggler after James Morrissey , on the team’s first home match on Murthy’s Farm,  got his foot to a scramble in the area. Pierce O’Keeffe picked out Dylan Sheridan for a second before O’Keeffe did all the approach work to help himself to the third.  Sub Joe Cullagh came off the bench to score the fourth leaving centre-back Lee Cooney to exquisitely curl in the fifth from a free-kick.

Sports Gear Direct Shield – Group C

CPL 5 – 1 Pepsico

CPL’s bright start to the season continued last Saturday at Douglas Community School. Gearóid Collins bent in the opener from thirty yards after been set up by Steve Cronin. Cian Higgins played Cronin in for a second midways through the first half, the former Blackrock Inn marksman finishing in style from long range. Alan Gregory reduced the deficit for the visitors from a penalty only for Collins and Higgins to work a neat one-two for the latter to put two goals between the teams once again. At this stage the hosts were buzzing and went in 4-1 up before half-time following a moment of sublime skill from Adrian O’Shea who sent Cronin in for his second on thirty-five minutes. Cronin was again at the hub of the action when his inch-perfect corner was hooked in by Johnny O’Driscoll. Higgins and Cronin were outstanding for the winners.

The Weigh Inn Dripsey 4 – 2  Co. Council

The Weigh Inn ended their shield group stages on a high with a morale boosting win over Co. Council, the conquerors of holders Satellite Taxis the week before. All the goals were scored in the second 45 with the home team going three up courtesy of Killian Kelliher (2) and Michael Reeb  before the visitors brought it back to 3-2 with goals from Grzegorz Sienicki and Robert Susek (pen.). Tony Nolan made the points safe with a fourth for the hosts who go into the upcoming league campaign with renewed confidence. Nolan, Kelliher, Rob Daly and Joe and Paddy Murphy were Dripsey’s outstanding performers on the day.
