Colso Celtic 2 – 2 UCC United (Colso win 4-2 on pens.)
COLSO CELTIC, in their first season, created the shock of the group stages when they knock-out fancied and twice finalists UCC Utd. on penalties to make it through to the last eight after an absorbing contest at Casement Pk. last Sunday morning, writes Finbarr Buckley.
After a tentative start by both teams, the visitors took control to go two up through Eric Montgomery and Ali Ahmidat. Somehow, James Corcoran’s charges got themselves back in contention when Ryan Towler pulled one back before half-time. Manager Corcoran’s half-time talk certainly worked the oracle when Andy O’Donovan equalized and despite increased pressure from the visitors to stay in the competition, the hosts hung on to win in the shoot-out after United missed their two opening spot-kicks. Towler, Liam Hennessy and Alex Cummins were Colso’s heroes on a historic day for the debutants.
Co. Council 2 – 0 Satellite Taxis
Council got their season up and running with a deserved win over the holder’s Satellite to register that all-important first win before the league campaign gets underway. After a scoreless opening 45, Fergus O’Connor fired in a penalty and Jordan Hughes made the points safe with a late second. Former Cork Eagles’ favourite Grzegorz Sienicki was dominant in the middle for the winners along with man-of-the-match Conor Hughes and Chris Halpin at the heart of the defence.

Cork Hospitals 7 – 1 Martin Harvey Solicitors
Cork Hospitals got back to winning ways to keep alive their hopes of qualification to the knock-out stages. The visitor’s cause wasn’t helped by three first-half injuries to key players and despite losing heavily in the finish, they battled to the end and had the consolation of scoring the goal of the match from Adam Sheehan’s tremendous ong range free-kick into the top corner. Dave Synott, who scored for the third match in-a-row, netted a couple with Ruaidhri De Barra, Joe Loftus, Conor O’Halloran and Danny O’Driscoll also on target.

PepsiCo 0 – 3 Janssen
Janssen picked up on their first win the previous weekend to secure another three points, again winning by a three-goal margin. A Pat Falvey goal separated the teams at half-time leaving Aidan ‘Minty’ Murphy to add a further two, the first from a penalty after Paul O’Doherty was taken down, to complete the scoring. Ger McSweeney, Michael Stack and Barry Cantillon impressed for the winners.

Doolan’s Cow 3 – 0 Marlboro Trust
Doolan’s Cow remain in contention for a fifth consecutive quarter-final appearance after accounting for twice winners Marlboro Trust. Aaron Hennessy opened the scoring in the 20th minute with the decisive second coming five minutes before half-time after Stephen McCarthy’s cross wasn’t fully cleared before James Cotter got the vital touch. The goal came as a cruel blow to Trust’s first-half endeavours and was further compounded by having a Paddy McSweeney goal disallowed for a marginal offside early in the second half. Liam Horgan tagged on a third for the home side in the 70th minute to make it two wins out of three for last season’s beaten finalists. Darren Geraghty, Craig Keegan and Tony O’Reilly stood out for Doolan’s.
Abtran 1 – 0 OBS
Abtran remain on course to top the group after a narrow one-nil win over OBS at Mayfield Community School. In a match, played in a good spirit and at a high tempo, scoring chances were scarce with the deciding score coming on the half-hour from John Murphy’s deflected through pass which fell invitingly for William Corcoran to brilliantly tuck away into the bottom corner. Dave Spillane and Steve Corbett shone for the visitors.
THOSE WERE THE DAYS : On the weekend of September 18/19th 1999 McSweeney’s took on Naval Services at Killeady to decide who would top shield group G. The hosts belied their division two status by going in front against the reigning premier division champions in the 65th minute through a goal of real quality from Gert Meers’ twenty yard chip. The Navy were fortunate to get back on level terms with five minutes remaining when Stephen Mulcahy’s harmless looking cross was deflected into his own net by a McSweeney’s’ defender. The Navy went on to win in a penalty shoot-out to meet Novartis, who were also fortunate to win their shoot-out against EMC Celtic after drawing 1-1 in the ninety minutes. In the premier Roches Stores conceded four second-half goals to Garda Athletic’s Tadhg Cronin (2), Philip Moore and Aidan Flanagan after former star Sean Stack had earlier given promoted Athletic a one-nil lead in the opening 45. CIE Athletic looked impressive in turning over ESB 4-2 courtesy of two goals apiece from Alan Ramsel and Pat O’Flynn. In division one, EMC had to dig deep to overcome Heitons 3-1 with goals from John O’Shea (2) and Sean O’Keeffe, with Kieran Sweeney replying for the visitors. Janssen went a goal behind after five minutes against Motorola to recover to lead 3-1 by the hour mark only to eventually go under 5-3
