Sports Gear Direct Shield – Group B

OBS 1 – 5 Marlboro Trust

Twice winners Trust, who haven’t fared well in the competition in recent seasons, got off to the best possible start when a combination of new and old personnel dismantled OBS 5-1 at Ballea Pk. last Friday night, writes Finbarr Buckley.

Kevin O’Sullivan banged in four along with another from Daniel del Blanco for the visitors who led three-nil at half-time. Arainn McGrath pulled one back at four-nil but it only proved to be a consolation as Trust’s dominance up front was rewarded with a fifth late on.

Abtran 6 – 2  SCS Crookstown Utd.

Abtran notched up another impressive win, this time over Crookstown United, who have yet to find their feet after two losses. Goals from Eoghan O’Sullivan (2) and Dale Dalton propelled the home team  into a three-nil half-time lead only for the visitors to come storming back with goals inside the opening ten minutes of the second 45  from debutant scorers Aidan Deasy and Eoin Drummy who followed up David O’Halloran’s shot which rebounded off the keeper. Former ALPHA SüD league and cup winner Chris Coughlan restored the host’s two goal advantage with a trade mark long range strike leaving Dalton and another ALPHA SüD favourite Aidan Fogarty to complete the scoring with a fine header.

Sports Gear Direct Shield – Group A

Dell EMC 4  – 2 Cork Hospitals

Dell EMC got back to winning ways to keep in contention by winning their second home match of the season. Mark Foley opened the scoring inside the opening five minutes before Brendan Daly fired in a potential goal of the season candidate with a flick over the head and a cracking finish from out on the touch line. JP Serres set up James Walsh for a third on thirty-five minutes with Ken O’Connor adding a fourth after fine approach play by Mick Donegan. Goals from Paul Moynihan and Dave Synnott kept the Hospitals in touch but despite the efforts of Joe Loftus and Chris Fitzgerald to reduce the arrears further, the two Healy’s, Gavin and Andy made sure the points never left EMC Pk.

Martin Harvey Solicitors 0 – 3  Planet Entertainment (Cork)

Unbeaten Planet made it three wins out of three courtesy of goals from Robson Mugabe, Joe Cullagh and Emmet Kennedy. After a slow start, the visitors got into their stride to win in style, the victory cemented by outstanding performances from Kelvin Owens, Damien O’Sullivan and Eoghan Ryan.

Sports Gear Direct Shield – Group C

Healy O’Connor Solicitors 3 – 1 Pepsico

Shane Healy came up with a second-half brace either side of Bryan Casey’s second to add to the screamer he scored against CPL the week before. Captain Darren Roache in the centre along with Brian and Niall Murphy were excellent at the back for Healy’s with Gary Cronin and penalty scorer Adam Kenneally the pick for Pepsico.

Janssen 4 – 1 CPL

Janssen were good value for their mid-week win over a weakened CPL at Moneygourney. After CPL’s Gerard Quigley cancelled out an own goal lead for Janssen, Eoghan Markey’s penalty restored the host’s lead with Markey going on to complete his hat-trick with two further second-half goals. James O’Sullivan, Paddy Markey and Eoin Moynihan shone for the debutants.

Sports Gear Direct Shield – Group D

UCC Utd. 8 – 1  Co. Council

UCC ran out comfortable winners despite a game Council remaining competitive to the end. After United eased to a three-nil lead inside fifteen minutes, Council went close with a ball taken off the line. A Fergus O’Connor penalty brought the score back to 3-1 but a second from Ali Ahmidat restored the host’s three goal lead at the break. Again, the visitors held their own in an evenly contested second 45 before Ahmidat completed his hat-trick with twenty minutes remaining. Three further goals sealed the win which flattered UCC but manager Stephen Moynihan can be well pleased with the scoring contributions of Ahmidat (3), Mo El Shouky (2), Vadym Horobets, Mick Hanley and Joao Matos.

Satellite Taxis 7 – 0 The Weigh Inn Dripsey

Satellite exposed the gulf between an established title-challenging team and a new outfit by registering four different goal scorers in the course of the ninety. Last season’s premier division top marksman Shane Hennessy was among the goals along with Aaron West, Paul Byrne and Red Geaney. Dave O’Driscoll, Finbarr O’Callaghan and Killian Kelleher caught the eye for The Weigh Inn.

THOSE WERE THE DAYS : Next weekend, forty years ago, twelve shield matches took place, the highlights of which were Byrnes 6-1 win over OLH at St. Anne’s Pk., Tom Virgo and Michael Feehan both scoring twice.
